Psychological issues of women in sports

Through out the history of women in sport, opportunity has increased for women yet they still get looked down upon. Many athletes and coaches are presented with the issue of sexual orientation throughout their sporting career. Women are usually seen as manly if they play certain sports. It is also rare for people to be watching women play sports, because apparently men playing sports is more entertaining. I am guilty of doing this sometimes. I would way rather watch men play basketball or baseball instead of women. I have grown up to watch all these men play sports, while even though I am female, I still do not have that much interest in watching women. In my women in sport class, we were supposed to name all the women in sports that we know. Our group named about twenty people. Other groups also had trouble with this as well. If we were to name men, I bet we would have had our paper full. Women may be shown as weaker and less able to be more competitive. I bet there are many women out there that may not be physically as fit as a man, but more mentally tough. Hopefully one day, women will be on the same level as men when it comes to sports, and more people will be more open to watching it.

  1. I completely agree that women in sports are not taken as seriously as men in sport. Some argue that they are too manly or not feminine enough, and often times stereotype them as lesbians. It is sad, because even though there are elite women athletes with outstanding athletic ability, they are always compared with men in their sport. It is obvious that women and men are built different, which includes their muscle structure and capability. Women have struggled to make a name for themselves in the world of sports today, and it is only their physical capabilities that are looked at. Like you said before, their mental toughness, in many ways, is superior than that on men. You stated that men sports are much more entertaining to watch. To some people most definitely, but have you ever watched a women’s water polo game? Amazing, and so much fun! ☺

  2. I fall into this category as well, I would absolutly prefer to watch male athletes preform over female athlestes any day. Being a male, that should not be suprising at all, but what might be suprising is that I would rather coach girl's soccer over boy's soccer any day. For me, it comes down to the psychological aspect and the way the sport is played. Boy's like to be flashy and individualistic, as where in a sport like soccer, the girl's tend to pass the ball around more often at a younger age. There is a lot more mental preperation put into coaching female atheletes over male athletes as well. For example, when I was coaching boys, I would yell at them to do something, and they would do it. As for one of the girl's I coached this past season, when I would yell at her to do what she was supposed to do, she lost her train of thought and found it hard to focus during the game.

  3. No one can deny the physical differences between men and women, and consequently people tend to favor the physically "stronger" sex. The problem is not society favoring strength, it is the lack of a sport that does not entirely depend on physical strength. There just aren't enough sports that can place men and women in an equal environment. Men and women both have the same the mental and dexterity capabilities, but a sport that relies on those two skills more so than physical capabilities has not been created. A sport like this would put men and women on an equal playing field. Some game shows like dog eat dog, survivor, or even old shows like "Where in the World is Carmen Diego?" have the attribute of equality and I think the sporting world should adopt this to lose its stigma of glorifying only the physically fit.
